Pros and Cons of Granite Countertops

Updated: Feb 15

Granite has become one of the most popular countertop materials, especially for kitchen remodels. It’s no wonder. Granite offers a classic look and goes a long way in updating and modernizing a kitchen. But is it the right choice for you? Before making this decision — and the substantial investment associated with a granite installation — it’s important to evaluate the pros and cons of granite.

Pros of a Granite Countertop

Smooth Surface That is Easy to Maintain

When dealing with slabs of granite and not tiles, the smooth surface makes it easy to maintain. Cleaning this surface is a quick and painless process, unlike some other materials. Not having grout to clean between tiles, or grooves that food gets caught in can save a lot of time and frustration in the long run! Because these countertops are so easy to clean, your kitchen will stay looking brand new. Many materials will scratch or stain, which can make your kitchen look older and take away value, but not this durable stone.

Durability

Granite is a strong material and therefore will not break or crack from minor mishaps or daily wear and tear. This means you can set a hot pan on the counter and it won’t get ruined. For this reason, granite is a great option when remodeling a kitchen. If your countertops get a lot of use, granite should be a top contender when you’re considering different materials. Granite isn’t just a good choice for indoor spaces. It can also be used in outdoor cooking/entertaining spaces. That’s because it can withstand the elements, whether that be the sun beating down on it, snow, or rain.

Granite Adds Value to Your Home

Because granite is considered “luxury,” it will add immense value to your home. Too often homeowners do not recoup all of the money from a kitchen or bathroom remodel, but in a strong housing market (especially in Denver!) the chances of recouping your investment — and even more — is highly likely. Whether or not you recoup your entire investment, granite countertops will be a selling point if and when the time comes to sell your home.

Cons of a Granite Countertop

High Cost of Granite

Not only is the material itself expensive, but installation also carries a hefty fee because of the weight of granite. One square foot of granite generally weighs between 12.8 and 18 pounds depending on the stone’s thickness.

Resealing

Granite will need to be resealed to avoid damage and keep your countertops looking their best. If granite is sealed incorrectly or not sealed at all, it can absorb liquids and permanently damage your countertops. So, how often should you do this? Somewhere between every 6 months to a year will do the trick. Although this may seem like a hassle, it is worth it when it comes to protecting your investment.

Durability

It’s no accident that durability makes both the pros and cons lists. If you have children and expensive glasses you like, this may be something to consider when choosing a countertop material. Strong materials have their benefits but if a glass is knocked over, you’ll most likely be cleaning up some glass. Granite is very unforgiving when it comes to dropping dishes on it.

Now that you’ve considered some of the advantages and disadvantages of granite, you’ll want to make sure you do the same research with any other countertop materials you’re looking at for a kitchen remodel. By educating yourself on the pros and cons of the materials you choose, you can make an informed decision and avoid any surprises in cost or other issues that may come up after your remodel is complete.
